SuLaMo Final Conference

General
The agricultural sector in Morocco is facing significant challenges in terms sustainable water management, mainly in the context of climate change. Soil and water management are a priority within national agricultural policies. Great efforts have been deployed to leverage the adoption of drip irrigation. In parallel to the conventional surface-drip-irrigation, subsurface-drip-irrigation is drawing great attention as it has proven its effectiveness in improving water use efficiency while sustaining yield and quality. Combined with other agricultural practices such as mulching, deficit irrigation, and supported by use of remote sensing technologies, advanced irrigation approaches are aiming to accurately assess crop water needs and therefore, contribute to sustainable water management. Furthermore, as water resources in many regions of the country are affected by salinization, unsustainable irrigation practices with saline water present serious threats to soils and crops. Water desalination stands as a tangible solution for providing good quality water for irrigation under saline to alleviate saline conditions.

The objective of the conference is to gather researchers, decision-makers and stakeholders to share research results and technologies on best practices for smart and precision water management. The conference marks the closing of the SuLaMo Project, which is part of the CLIENT II Program(*), funded by the German Federal Ministry of Education and research (BMBF), that helped engage several Moroccan and German partners to address sustainable irrigation water management and develop solutions that can be beneficial to Moroccan farmers.
